Frequently asked questions

What is a Swim-a-Thon & Dash?

This name came from a combination of two different events. A Swim-a-Thon is a USA Swimming sanctioned event where athletes have two hours to swim continuouly to try to get as many laps as they can completed and the pledges they receive for each lap will be given to the club and the USA Swimming Foundation. A Dash is just what we would all think it would be a run. So why combined the two? We wanted to bring more awarness to the sport of USA Swimming in the state of North Dakota and the wonderful athletes it produces. They are well rounded athletes that excel as leaders in their communities. We also wanted to have an event were not just swimmers could participate but their families and other community members could participate.

Why use this as a fundraiser now?

Jaws normal hosts swim meets yearly as fundraisers however due to Blizzards and other circumstances out of our control we have not been able to host a meet for almost two years. The money raised helps Jaws keep one of the lowest club swimming rates in the state as well as provide reduced rates and scholarships to athletes that may not be able to afford the full club swimming rate.

What is the USA Swimming Foundation?

The Mission of the USA Swimming Foundation: Serving as the philanthropic arm of USA Swimming, the USA Swimming Foundation works to strengthen the sport by saving lives and building champions. By equipping our children with the life-saving skill of learn-to-swim and providing financial support to our heroes on the U.S. National Team, the USA Swimming Foundation aims to provide the wonderful experience of swimming to kids at all levels across the country. Saving Lives The USA Swimming Foundation aims to provide the opportunity for every child in the U.S. to learn to swim. Through an annual grant program and by partnering with swim lesson providers and water safety advocates across the country, we help to support swimming lessons and educate children and their families on the importance of learning how to swim. Building Champions The USA Swimming Foundation is dedicated to supporting the pursuit of excellence for swimmers at all levels across our sport, from those just learning to swim, to age-group swimmers, to U.S. Olympic hopefuls. By providing funding to teams, athletes, and programs, the USA Swimming Foundation works to build champions and create a legacy for future generations of swimmers. Saving Lives - The Facts The Foundations goal is to provide the opportunity for EVERY CHILD in America to learn to swim regardless of financial capacity... and we need your help. One month of formal swimming lessons, which reduces the risk of drowning by 88%, can cost as little as $50 per child. You can make a difference in the life of a child and help break the generational barrier in learning to swim! Building Champions - The Facts The United States is one of a few countries with a government that does not provide funding for its Olympic-level athletes. Our swimmers earned 33 of the 121 medals (27%) that Team USA won at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, which ties for the most medals won in the modern era. With support from USA Swimming Foundation donors, the 2016 USA Olympic Swimming Team’s performance is considered among the best in history. When you donate to the USA Swimming Foundation, you help the elite swimmers of today and tomorrow, prepare and perform at their best

Does some of the money raised go somewhere else?

In a normal year 5% of the proceeds raise are required to go to the USA Swimming Foundation. However, due to Pandemic USA Swimming recigized that many clubs are hurting around the country due to not being able to host their normal fundraisers. This year they are waving the 5% fee of money raised and the Club will get to keep the full amount raised.

What happens if there is bad weather the day of the event?

The great thing about hosting this event at Jamestown High School is their indoor running track above the gym. We will do some funky manuvering that day but the event will go on.

Where will the running take place?

Most of the people planning this event are swimmers and really do not like to run. So, we have asked for help from the Jamestown High School Cross Country and Track coaches to get the best running routes available. Once these routes are finalized we will post the routes on this site so people can get a look at what run may look like.

Will there be a lifegaurd on duty while people are swimming?

During the swimming we want everyone to be as safe as possible. We will have a lifegaurd on deck as well as the Jaws coaches who are required to be certified in basic water safety techniques and CPR & First Aid on deck. They will also serve as the First Aid attendents for the entire event. If however, advanced medical care is needed EMS will be contacted.

This sounds like a great event however, we are not able to attend can we just donate money?

Although, we would love to see all of your happy faces that are willing to participate we would be happy to take your donation. Donations can be mailed to our PO box and a check payable to Jaws swim club. Our mailing address is PO Box 1911, Jamestown ND 58402-1911.
